Nairobi Police have apprehended an individual suspected of stealing a container loaded with goods valued at more than Ksh.10 million in Mombasa. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Friday that the stolen shipment, consisting of various cooking appliances, was intercepted at the Saika area, situated off Kangundo Road in Embakasi.
Francis Victor Karua Gathii, the suspect, was captured by a team of investigators from Nairobi’s Elite Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau and others from Kilindini.
A statement from the DCI stated, “A joint team of detectives from Nairobi and Kilindini has successfully recovered assorted cooking appliances that had been stolen during their transportation from the port of Mombasa to Malindi in the Saika area within Nairobi County.”
The DCI also disclosed that it is likely that the container was diverted by the driver with the assistance of accomplices who claimed that the truck had experienced mechanical problems while en route to Malindi.
When the recipient of the goods lost contact with the truck, the DCI explained that the consignee reported the incident at Kilindini Police Station, triggering an investigation. According to the DCI, “The container, containing goods worth over Sh10 million, is suspected to have been diverted by the driver who, in collaboration with others, failed to deliver the goods to the intended recipient. They claimed that the truck had developed mechanical problems at Kikambala, along the busy Mombasa-Malindi highway.”
The suspect is presently in custody and will await a court appearance.
