A man lost his life, and seven residences were turned into rubble when presumed al Shabaab insurgents launched an assault on the Widhu area in Mkunumbi ward, Lamu County, at around 2:00 AM on Wednesday.
Before setting the houses on fire, they also fatally attacked the security guard of Majembeni Primary School.
These rural villages of Widhu, Salama, and Juhudi have been recurrently targeted by terrorists, compelling many locals to leave their homes in search of safer places.
Over a span of four months, these villages have experienced more than six such attacks, leading to the destruction of over 40 houses by suspected al Shabaab militants and the tragic loss of more than ten lives.
This ambush on Wednesday took place just before the scheduled meeting of Interior CS Kithure Kindiki with the Security and Intelligence Committees of the Coast Regional, Tana River County, and Galledyertu Sub-County.
The meeting involving the leadership of Tana River County is chaired by Tana River County Governor Godhana Dhadho and Senator Danson Mungatana.
