Serena Williams has welcomed her second daughter into the world, as confirmed by her husband on Tuesday. The announcement came with the assurance that both mother and baby are “happy & healthy,” a relief considering the challenging birth of their first child.
Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, who is the founder of Reddit, shared the news on Instagram. He posted a photo of himself with a radiant Williams embracing both of their daughters. Ohanian expressed his gratitude and joy, addressing his 41-year-old wife and praising her by saying, “you’re the GMOAT,” a playful twist on the acronym “Greatest Of All Time,” now referring to her exceptional journey as a mother.
The newborn daughter has been named Adira River Ohanian.
In 2017, Williams, renowned as one of the greatest tennis players in history, achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Australian Open while pregnant with their first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. However, her post-pregnancy experience took a serious turn when she faced life-threatening complications due to a blood clot in her lung following an emergency C-section to deliver Olympia.
The pulmonary embolism required Williams to be bedridden for six weeks. Remarkably, she persevered through her recovery and returned to competitive tennis only five months later, teaming up with her sister Venus in Fed Cup doubles.
Having retired from tennis in the past year, Williams has transitioned into motherhood and expressed her readiness to embrace this new chapter of her life after a career that turned her into a superstar for her generation.
